The areas of activity in which the Practice offers a particular advantage include:

Refurbishment and modification of existing structures.

These projects require particular attention to the details of the proposed construction. This covers such items as: the ways in which new members can be installed; the support requirements in various temporary conditions; the restrictions on space imposed by surrounding members; the implications on finishes and fabric of altering existing load paths and the loading on particular members; the specification and communication generally required to convey the constraints to contractors at procurement and during construction.

Developments for industrial clients to whom the building requirement is a subsidiary function of their process needs.

This involves the development of a clear understanding of the process requirement as it affects the building and of the relative importance of aspects of it which may impose costly design constraints. Such an understanding is particularly important in this sector, where normal considerations of acceptable construction costs or tolerances may be inappropriate.

Building construction on sites with difficult ground conditions.

These may include such factors as contamination by industrial or domestic waste, gas emissions, shallow or deep mining. The process of decision making for design and investigation activities needs a particular type of strategic approach on such sites where the extent of the problem is rarely clear at the outset and ground treatment and investigation costs can represent a significant proportion of the total development cost.
